When Colleen Van Houten contacted me about designing a new site for her, I was a bit hesitant. Of course I was interested. She's a professional services provider, she's very intelligent, funny af (she should try stand-up comedy if the interior design thing doesn't work...ha ha), and knows her stuff. I learned a lot about interior design, colors, paints, scaling up and down, economics, and more from her. And she is so fun to talk to.
Colleen wasn't entirely sure what she wanted for her site but she knew a few things she needed:
- It needed to be simple and elegant and easy to navigate
- It needed to highlight her work which is actually quite varied
- It needed to really convince the visitor that they should contact her because her work is just that good
The only qualm I had about her content was that she didn't have a professional photographer take before and after images, which I think could have made the site somewhat different. But Colleen isn't one of those interior designers who tells clients to remove every stick of furniture they own and replace it with the latest or the most expensive stuff. Instead, she works closely with clients, with what they have and what they want. And the result is always something unique, something that is an extension of their unique character and personality.
"Let's tell your story, not someone else's" is her motto. And it is not only fitting, but true. Colleen's respect and understanding of the people she works with is tremendous.
Take a look at her brand new site. It's tiny but packs a mighty punch. Loads nice 'n fast and is beautifully SEO'd so guess what? She is getting noticed and getting more business. Yay!
